The War of Contour

Contour-a tricky art. Sometimes it’ll give you supermodel cheekbones, the snatched face that seemingly everyone desires. Other times, it makes you look like you slapped on two brown triangles on your face, making your face appear muddied and dirty.

Below is a breakdown of Western vs East Asian contouring styles. Read on to see which might be better for you.

Western contour and beauty standards emphasize a prominent bone structure, for developing a mature image. Because of this beauty standard, we can explain one of the reasons why the Hadid sisters are so famous-their striking cheekbones.

In addition, this is also why many celebrities have had buccal fat removal, in order to project their cheekbones more.

Chrissy Teigen has been open about her buccal fat removal.

This contour which, if done incorrectly, makes your face look gaunt, aged, or muddied with large patches of brown. Western contour products are typically an intense shade of warm brown, with some using bronzer as a substitute. In order to do western contour correctly, make sure to follow the structure of your own natural cheekbones, and apply a minimal amount of contour, building as you go, in order to avoid being drowned out by product.

Whereas Western contour styles and beauty standards focus on building facial projection and a mature style, East Asian beauty standards and contour styles emphasize a cute, youthful, slim face, with a v-shaped jawline. They do not emphasize the bone structure, with full cheeks being seen as cute and youthful.

For example, this is Jane Wonyoung, Korea's “IT GIRL”. She has sparked “Wonyoungism”, getting thousands of people to imitate her, just because she fits the Korean beauty standards incredibly well.

In order to achieve an East Asian contour style, use a contour palette with paler (and typically cooler) tones.

Emphasize the outer perimeter of the face, but not the bone structure.

Then, take your concealer and mark a small triangle. The base of the triangle should be below your eye, with the point pointing towards the corner of your lips, to emphasize the fleshiness of your cheeks.
